This sort of “out of band” secure channel — something that only the device OS has access to, not user code — is a good idea in general. The hardware Home button was one such (since developers couldn’t override its behavior), and it seems it’s sorely lacking on the X.

Security features like this are also sorely lacking on web pages, leading to attacks that mimic the page “chrome” to plague password managers.
